How to transform your thinking and Guard Your Heart

Posted on May 1, 2017 by breakfree in Categories: Faith

“As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.”
Proverbs 23: 7

“You’re really not that pretty.”
“You’re not a good leader.”
“You’re fat.”
“You don’t finish anything”

Quick, what do you believe? What thoughts do you allow to enter your heart on a daily basis? You hold the power to decide whether what is said; is true or not. So, what have you decided about yourself?

The millions of things you hear, see or experience, like a puzzle, make up the many pieces of your mind. Will you allow your thought life to be flooded with negative conversations, opinions, images, videos and news? Or will you nourish your thought life with the word of God? It says in Proverbs 23:7 “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Isn’t that crazy? You can actually think in your heart, and those thoughts will eventually create your reality. The Bible also says that out of the heart flows the issues of life. So from that scripture we can incur that many of the life struggles we face as Christians are coming from our own hearts — not the devil.

But fear not, you are not powerless. You are well able to overcome negative thinking. As believers of Christ and children of God, guarding our hearts is crucial to living a successful life. That is why we have to be very careful about what we allow our minds to entertain. We must carefully monitor our conversations, what we watch on television, the music we listen to and so on. Remember, you are the gatekeeper of your heart, not God. He has given you the authority to be vigilant, keep watch and make the right decisions concerning what you let into your life.

In some way or another, you will always act out what’s in your heart. Without knowing it, you can meditate on bad experiences and hinder yourself from progressing. For instance, if you were fired from a job, the best thing to do is to learn from that experience, self-check, cry, do whatever you need to do and move on! But if you meditate on losing the job, rehearse the details of how you were treated unfairly or whatever the case might be, it can stop you from getting a new one. You’ll be wondering why no one has called you back for an interview or why you just can’t seem to land a position, and not realize that maybe it’s because subconsciously you created a blueprint of loss in your heart. Negative images in your heart can only be replaced with positive ones by renew your mind to the word of God.

Just as Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

A Change Of Heart
Remember you have the power and responsibility to guard your heart. Be intentional about what you watch, the friends you have, and the music you listen to. Be alert when negativity tries to enter into your heart so that you can stop it. If you have allowed the wrong things to enter your heart in the past, then pray and ask God to up root them. Who can handle your heart better than Him? Just as Psalm 51:10 says, there comes a time when we have to pray and ask God to “Create in (us) a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within (us).” God wants you to be intentional about managing your thought life because whatever you shape in your mind you will eventually see in your life. Maybe you have heard this before…but it’s always good to be reminded.

Your Thoughts Become Your Words….
Your words become you actions….
Your actions become you habits….
And your habits determine your life….

  • In the social media world, we face thousands of opinions about who we should be, what we should look like, or what we should have accomplished by now. There’s a huge temptation to compare ourselves with others, question our significance and so many wonder if they’ll ever break free from what other people think.

Nobody really wants to talk about this (because many leaders are struggling with this too), but it’s trueeeeee…😓 It’s time to stop listening to these voices! A few years ago, God led me to write a women's devotional all about this type of stuff. Let’s just say it was not my best work. Have you ever looked at your old journals and been like 🙃😬? Anyway, I reworked it and with a little bit of elbow grease and vulnerability, it’s finally finished just in time for women’s month. Sorry fellas, you know who runs the world. Just kidding. 🤗

The You Are Enough mini devotional takes you through 15 days of encouragement that will help you embrace your identity in Christ with confidence. 💪🏽 Stay tuned! Coming March 2019! 📅

  • I’m going back to Cali 🎶😎🌴 Cause ya girl is tired of this -35-degree weather in Chicago! Last month, I took a trip to LA and I had the 👏🏾best 👏🏾time! I wasn’t sure if I was going to take the trip cause Cali ain't cheap especially after Christmas 😅, but I felt led to step out in faith and God surprised me in so many more ways than I can explain in this post cause y'all only got a 2-second attention span on IG. 🤣

But let me just encourage you.

Don’t look at what you have naturally. Sometimes, you have to step out in faith and trust God even when things don’t make sense. Of course, you have to use wisdom, but when you feel God leading you to do something, timing is everything. Make the move.

Like I always say, He knows the plan! Be open to whatever He wants to do in your life this year and watch Him respond to your faith in His ability and not your own willingness to make something happen. He might even take you to Cali 🏄🏾‍♀️ or Cambodia! 👀
